If you’ve spent any time searching for used sedans for sale in Destin, you’ve probably seen those “$199/month!” ads along Highway 98. We see them too. And we know what happens when families walk into dealerships chasing that number — they leave confused, pressured, or worse, locked into a deal that costs them thousands more than expected. At Destin Autos, we do things differently.
What’s In This Guide
- Why we focus on total cost, not monthly payments
- What we show you upfront (that some dealers don’t)
- Choosing a sedan that fits your family’s life
- Your financing options compared honestly
- Special support for military families
- What to look for during a test drive
- Questions customers ask us
We believe you deserve to see the full picture before you sign anything. That means showing you the total cost of what you’re buying, not just a monthly payment designed to get you in the door. It means walking you through financing options at your pace, not ours. And it means treating every family who comes to our lot the way we’d want to be treated if we were in your shoes.
Whether you’re a young family looking for something safe and reliable, a professional ready to upgrade from your current vehicle, or a service member navigating a PCS move from Eglin or Hurlburt Field, our goal is the same: help you make a decision you’ll feel good about for years to come.
This guide explains exactly how we approach used sedan financing and gives you the tools to evaluate any dealership, including ours.
Why We Focus on Total Cost, Not Monthly Payments
The number that actually matters
Here’s something we tell every customer who walks through our doors: that monthly payment number doesn’t tell you what a car actually costs.
A sedan advertised at $250/month might end up costing you more over five years than one priced at $300/month. How? It depends on the interest rate, the loan term, the vehicle’s reliability, and what you’ll spend on maintenance and fuel.
We call this “total cost of ownership,” and it’s how we think you should evaluate any used sedan, whether you buy from us or somewhere else.
What Goes Into Total Cost of Ownership
- The purchase price (what you’re actually paying for the car)
- Total interest over the life of your loan
- Insurance premiums for your specific vehicle
- Fuel costs based on real MPG, not EPA estimates
- Scheduled maintenance (oil changes, tires, brakes)
- Expected repairs based on the model’s track record
- What you’ll get back when you sell or trade it in
When you visit Destin Autos, we’re happy to sit down and run these numbers with you. We’d rather you understand exactly what you’re getting into than wonder about it later. For more details on how financing costs add up, check out our Transparent Used Car Financing Guide.
What We Show You Upfront (That Some Dealers Don’t)
Transparency isn’t a marketing word for us. It’s how we operate. Here’s what we commit to showing every customer before they make a decision:
The Actual Numbers on Your Loan
- Your interest rate (APR)
- Your loan term in months
- The total amount you’ll pay over the life of the loan
- How much of that is interest vs. principal
We don’t play games with monthly payments to hide a higher rate or longer term. If you want to compare our financing to what your bank or credit union offers, we encourage it. In fact, we recommend getting pre-approved somewhere else first so you have a baseline to work from.
The Vehicle’s Complete History
We provide Carfax reports on every vehicle we sell. If a car has been in an accident, we tell you. If there are gaps in the service history, we tell you. We’d rather lose a sale than have you discover something later that we knew about and didn’t share.
Fees That Are Actually Required vs. Negotiable
Florida requires dealers to collect specific fees like sales tax, title, and registration. But documentation fees, electronic filing fees, and other add-ons vary by dealership and are often negotiable. We’re upfront about what we charge and why.
Why does this matter? Because the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reports that many buyers don’t fully understand their loan terms when they sign. We don’t want that to be you.

Choosing a Sedan That Fits Your Family’s Life
Questions worth answering before you shop
Not every sedan is right for every family. Before we talk about specific models, we encourage you to think through what you actually need:
Questions Worth Answering Before You Shop
- How many people will regularly ride in this car?
- Do you need room for car seats? How many, and for how long?
- What’s your typical weekly driving: mostly local errands, highway commuting, or a mix?
- Do you have a trusted mechanic, or do you prefer a vehicle with easy parts availability?
- How long do you plan to keep this car?
Once you know what you need, you can evaluate vehicles based on what matters to your family, not what a salesperson thinks you should prioritize.
Models We Consistently See Perform Well on the Emerald Coast
We’re not going to claim one sedan is “the best” because that depends on your situation. But based on what we see in our service records and what customers tell us, these models tend to hold up well in our coastal environment:
Honda Accord and Civic: Strong reliability track record, widely available parts, good fuel economy. We regularly stock Honda Accord sedans and Honda Civic sedans at our Fort Walton Beach lot, including recent model years like the 2024 Honda Accord Sedan and 2024 Honda Civic Sedan when available.
Toyota Camry and Corolla: Similar story. These models have earned their reputation over decades.
Mazda3 and Mazda6: Often overlooked, but solid reliability and enjoyable to drive.
Hyundai Sonata and Elantra: Have improved significantly in recent years and are often priced below comparable Honda or Toyota models. If you’re looking for a Hyundai sedan in Fort Walton Beach, we typically have several in stock.
We carry all of these when they meet our standards. If you’re interested in a specific model, check our current sedan inventory or let us know what you’re looking for. We can often source vehicles that aren’t on the lot yet.

Financing Paths: What Are Your Options?
An honest breakdown of each path
You have more financing options than you might realize. Here’s an honest breakdown of each path, including where we fit in:
Credit Unions
If you’re a member of Eglin Federal Credit Union, Pen Air, Navy Federal, or USAA, start there. Credit unions often offer lower rates than banks or dealerships because they’re member-owned and not-for-profit.
What to do: Get pre-approved before you visit any dealership. This gives you a rate to compare against and protects you from accepting a higher rate without realizing it.
Banks
If you have an existing relationship with Regions, Hancock Whitney, or another local bank, they may offer competitive rates, especially if you have other accounts with them.
What to know: Bank rates are typically slightly higher than credit union rates, but approval can be faster if you’re already a customer.
Dealer Financing (Including Ours)
Dealerships work with multiple lenders and can sometimes find rates that compete with or beat what you’d get on your own, especially if you have credit challenges.
How we handle it: When you finance through Destin Autos, we show you the rate our lender offers and let you compare it to your pre-approval. If your credit union beats our rate, we’ll tell you to go with them. We’d rather earn your trust for the next car than squeeze extra margin on this one.
What About “Buy Here, Pay Here”?
We’re not that kind of dealership. Buy-here-pay-here lots typically charge much higher rates and often require weekly payments. If your credit situation is challenging, we’ll work with you to find legitimate lender options, or be honest if we can’t help.

For Our Military Families: We Understand Your Timeline
Special support for Eglin, Hurlburt, and Tyndall families
If you’re stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, or coming from Tyndall, we know your situation is different from a typical car buyer. You’re often working against PCS orders, deployment timelines, and the stress of relocating your entire family.
Here’s how we try to make this easier:
Military-Friendly Support at Destin Autos
- We work with your timeline, not against it. If you’ve received orders and need a vehicle before you report, tell us. We’ll prioritize getting your paperwork done.
- We understand military-specific financing. Navy Federal, USAA, PenFed, and other military-focused lenders have programs designed for service members.
- We don’t charge extra for military appreciation. We price our vehicles fairly from the start.
- Power of Attorney transactions. If your spouse needs to handle the purchase while you’re deployed, we’re experienced with POA documentation.
- Buying from out of state. We can work with you remotely with video walkarounds, detailed photos, and clear communication.
For a complete walkthrough of the military car buying process, see our Military SUV Buying Guide for Eglin, Hurlburt & Tyndall.
What to Look for During a Test Drive
Take a real test drive, not just around the block
We encourage every customer to take a real test drive. Not just around the block, but on roads similar to what you’ll actually drive.
Before You Start
- Adjust the seat and mirrors to your normal driving position
- If you use a car seat, bring it and make sure it fits properly
- Turn off the radio so you can hear the car
During the Drive, Pay Attention To
Test Drive Checklist
- Acceleration: Does the car respond smoothly? Any hesitation or jerking?
- Braking: Do the brakes feel firm and responsive? Any pulling to one side?
- Steering: Does it track straight, or do you have to constantly correct?
- Transmission: For automatics, are shifts smooth? Any slipping or hard shifts?
- Noise: Any unusual sounds from the engine, suspension, or brakes?
On the Highway
- Does it merge confidently?
- Any vibration at highway speeds?
- How’s the wind and road noise?
Back at the Lot
- Test all the electronics: windows, locks, lights, A/C, infotainment
- Check the A/C specifically (Florida heat is hard on compressors)
- Look at the tires for even wear
If something feels off during the test drive, ask about it. A good dealership will give you a straight answer.
For a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection checklist, see our Used SUV Safety Checklist — the same principles apply to sedans.

Getting the Vehicle Inspected
We inspect every vehicle before we put it on our lot. But we also encourage buyers to get an independent inspection if it gives them peace of mind.
Our Inspection Process
Every sedan we sell goes through a mechanical inspection. We check the major systems: engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, and electrical. If something needs attention, we fix it before listing the vehicle or disclose it clearly in the listing.
Independent Inspections
If you’d like a third-party mechanic to look at a vehicle before you buy, we’re happy to accommodate that. Many buyers take vehicles to their own mechanic or a local inspection service. This can catch things we might have missed.
What We Provide
- Carfax vehicle history report
- Our inspection notes
- Any available service records from previous owners
- Answers to your questions — we’d rather explain something twice than have you wonder about it
What Happens After You Buy
Our relationship doesn’t end when you drive off the lot. Here’s what we recommend for keeping your sedan running well on the Emerald Coast:
After-Purchase Recommendations
- Keep up with scheduled maintenance. Your owner’s manual has a maintenance schedule for a reason.
- Find a mechanic you trust. Whether that’s our service department or an independent shop.
- Coastal considerations: Salt air and humidity are hard on vehicles. Wash your car more frequently, including the undercarriage.
- Keep your records. Documented maintenance history can significantly increase your vehicle’s value when you sell or trade.

Questions Customers Ask Us
There’s no single answer. It depends on the lender, your income, your down payment, and other factors. We work with lenders who serve a range of credit profiles. The best way to find out is to apply for pre-qualification. It’s a soft pull that won’t affect your credit score.
Yes, in most cases. We’ll appraise your trade-in and compare it to your payoff amount. If you have equity, it goes toward your new purchase. If you owe more than the car is worth, we’ll explain your options honestly. Get a trade-in estimate here.
If you’re pre-approved and know what you want, you can often be in and out in a couple of hours. If you’re starting from scratch with no pre-approval and still deciding on a vehicle, plan for longer. We don’t rush anyone through the process.
We price our vehicles based on market data — specifically what comparable vehicles are selling for in our area. That said, we’re always willing to have a conversation, especially if you’ve done your research and have specific comparisons to share.
It depends on what goes wrong and when. Florida has limited lemon law protections for used vehicles, but we stand behind what we sell. If something happens shortly after purchase that we should have caught, we’ll work with you to make it right.
Ready to Find Your Sedan?
We’ve given you a lot of information here. Maybe more than you expected. That’s intentional. We’d rather you show up informed and confident than confused and anxious.
